800 thousand Iranians with glaucoma are unaware of their illness
Haidar Amini, on the eve of the 21st Iranian Congress of Ophthalmology, added: Glaucoma is the first cause of irreversible blindness and the third major cause of blindness in the world, meaning that if left untreated, it will lead to blindness and other curable is not.
A professor at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, who said that glaucoma is no symptom, continued: Unfortunately, until the late stages of the disease, one does not know that he has been infected.
“People over the age of 5 should be referred to an ophthalmologist so that if they have glaucoma, they are diagnosed in a timely manner to avoid blindness,” he said.
The head of the Glaucoma Center at the 21st Iranian Congress of Ophthalmology, saying that 5% of glaucoma patients do not know about their disease, said that about 6,000 people in Iran have glaucoma who have no knowledge of their disease.
Asked which people are most at risk for glaucoma, he said: People with first-degree relatives with the disease, those with high eye-glasses scores, those close to the camera and those who are older And those with a history of severe eye trauma and who are taking corticosteroids, both systemically and eye drops, are among those most at risk for glaucoma.
“These people should be referred to an ophthalmologist and diagnosed by measuring intraocular pressure and other diagnostic data,” said a professor at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
Amini continued: To prevent glaucoma, it is advisable to see ophthalmologists over the age of 6 every year.
The 21st Iranian Ophthalmology Congress will be held in Mashhad from November to December.
